Kayaking can be as strenuous or easygoing as you like, depending on the watercourse you choose and the paddle you use. you do need to be aware that kayaking can be dangerous even on the gentlest of rivers so you should always be aware of your own capabilities and what accessories you will need to get you out of trouble should the situation arise.

Kayak paddles are an essential accessory that you need in kayaking water sports. Various kinds of paddles are available for kayakers and the different shafts vary with use. Follow these easy tips and you will find the perfect kayak paddle for your needs.

  • Choose a paddle that fits your body size. The paddle is an extension of your arm and should be easy to hold and use. You can get a good measurement for the right size for your body by holding the shaft of the paddle where you normally would while rafting. The blade should be about four to five inches from the palm of your hand.
  • Consider the length of your upper body as well as the width of the kayak you will most likely use. You may be tall but have a short torso. You would need a shorter paddle in that case.
  • Rent various paddles before choosing your own to buy. Kayak rentals are up and down all the good rivers, but the rental people typically only like you to take one paddle at a time in case you tip and lose the extras. You may have to go out a few times to try the different kinds of paddles available.
  • Check out paddles made of different materials and think about which might work best for your personal use. Paddles can be made of wood, aluminum and plastic. Some are lighter, while others may be more durable.
  • Compare wood and aluminum paddles. Wood paddles covered in fiberglass are very durable but will give your arms a workout. Aluminum paddles may not give you as much power as you might like in the water, but they will be easier on the joints.
  • Look at one-piece shafts and shafts that come apart for convenient storage and travel. A solid construction may last longer, but you won’t need to travel in a van or SUV every time you want to go kayaking just to fit the paddle.
  • Buy a kayak paddle with an oval grip on the shaft. They are much easier on the hands in the long run than the old-fashioned round grips.
